Chicago street workshop

Back to shooting film for street photography

Spread the love

Chicago street workshopI’ve gone through phases over the years, from shooting film, to shooting only digital, then back to shooting both film and digital, and now it seems as if I’m back to shooting only film in my street photography work. While film photography may be much more difficult than digital photography, when you “hit it” with film, there’s nothing like it!

I have five people who are attending my Chicago street photography workshop today, but I doubt anyone will be using a film camera. I’m bringing three film cameras with me today for people to try.

First, I’m bringing my Nikon FM. This is a fantastic little camera, especially since mine is broken! Yes, for me that’s a good thing! Normally you must have the film advance lever pulled back in order to fire the camera. I HATE this about the Nikon FM, but, on my FM, the lock is broken!

I’m also bringing a more modern film camera, the Nikon F-100. This is a fully modern camera much like our digital cameras of today. The light meter in the F-100 is just out of this world. I’ll even use my F-100 as a light meter for my other cameras, it’s that good.

Lastly, I’m bringing my Keiv 88 medium format camera. These old cameras are actually fantastic for shooting street photography. People find my old 88 camera so interesting, they forget that I’m taking photos! I’ve had people walk right up to the lens and look in!

Should be a fine day here in Chicago for a street photography workshop! If you’re in town over the summer, be sure to attend one of my workshops or photowalks!
