Over the weekend, I worked on a photoshoot for a project that I’m working on. During the shoot, I took 18 captures. Out of those 18 captures, only two were usable images. Neither image is a Rembrandt, but they are solid images usable for a photo essay. When I photograph, I don’t shoot with a single image in mind; I shoot for the story, the essay, the book.
I like to make 8×10 prints of any image that I’m considering for a publication. There’s something about holding a physical image in your hands that just can’t be duplicated on a computer screen, at least not for me.
Having physical prints of both images, I can now see the need to go back into Lightroom and turn down the highlights just a bit, and do a little brushwork to deepen some blacks in certain areas. I’ll print them out one more time to make sure everything is the way that I like it.
This project that I’m currently working on won’t be published for quite some time, as I’m completing publications for previous projects. Everything will be transferred over to two separate hard drives. Someday, if I live long enough, I’ll reopen the files with a fresh eye.
