Don’t Bring “Street Think” Into Your Documentary Work

Many people fall short in their documentary work because they are thinking like street photographers. Documentary photography is at a whole different level than street photography, which takes much more work and thought.

You shouldn’t bring street photography nor the “I’m an artist” mindset into documentary photography. Art is about the individual carving their will upon reality. Documentary photography is about surrendering to the reality that is – the pre-given. This is the direct OPPOSITE of art, as with doc photography, we capture spontaneous and unscripted moments of time. We have ZERO control over any of this. We’re merely there for the catch! Documentary photography is not art.
